Posted on Oct 28, 2007 under Ubuntu |
Finally the long waited Ubuntu 7.10 aka. Gusty Gibbon have arrived with exiciting new features, those of you have not upgrade your ubuntu distributions yet, type this in your terminal $~ update-manager, and you should see an option saying upgrade to ubuntu 7.10. Its totally safe and you don’t have to backup any data and the fetching of files really going to take a while so you might want to keep your computer turned on (internet also) but on the other hand the update will resume the next time if you wish to shut down your ubuntu, its just that you have to open up the update-manager console again and continue with the update process.
Anyways, I have just upgraded my ubuntu from Fiest Fawn to Gusty Gibbon. Gusty comes with GNOME 2.20 with a lot of new features and bug fixes. The Compiz Fusion (3D desktop) comes by default to gusty gibbon and if your hardware is compatible with it the go to System–>Preferences–>Appearance, whereby you can choose to enable or disable these effects. I would like some effects but not too much of it so i choosed the second option :). The search applet is now enchanced with more exciting features like sending messages, opening web bookmarks and searche, and more. If your machine is being used by many users then you would love the new fast user swicthing applet.Firefox now comes with plugin finder wizard where by users can search for plugins and install it almost instantly.
Fast User switching :

There’s a good news for those need to be sharing document and files with Windows, Gutsy Gibbon now fully supports reading and writing to NTFS partitions.
For ubuntu server lovers the New pre-configured installation options includes Mail Server, File Server, Print Server, and Database Server options join existing LAMP and DNS options for pre-configured installations, easing the deployment of common server configurations.
